About Charta Health

At Charta, we're pioneering a transformative approach to healthcare billing through the power of generative AI. Our mission is to revolutionize this critical yet often cumbersome aspect of healthcare, empowering medical billers and coders with tools that elevate their efficiency by leaps and bounds. Our innovative AI technology enables these professionals to operate at an astounding 10x to 100x more efficiently, while significantly reducing operational costs to just 2% of the standard expense.

In an industry where the focus should rightly be on patient care and clinical services, Charta steps in to ensure that healthcare providers are unburdened from the complexities of non-clinical operations. Our cutting-edge solutions are designed to handle the intricacies of the revenue cycle, freeing up healthcare professionals to concentrate on what they do best – caring for patients.

Our vision at Charta is to create a seamless, efficient, and cost-effective billing process that is invisible yet indispensable. By entrusting us with the operational challenges, healthcare providers can redirect their resources and attention towards patient-centric services, secure in the knowledge that their billing needs are expertly managed. Join us in our journey to redefine healthcare billing, and be a part of a team that's making a tangible difference in the world of healthcare.

About the Opportunity

As a Senior / Staff AI Engineer at Charta Health, you will be the technical linchpin behind our mission to build the world’s most accurate, production-grade medical-coding engine—one that assigns ICD-10, HCC, CDPS, and CRG codes with unparalleled precision and transparency. You’ll own the full model-development lifecycle, from curating and labeling multimodal clinical datasets to shipping high-throughput inference services that power value-based-care workflows across the country. Partnering with clinicians, health-information managers, and product leaders, you’ll translate messy real-world documentation into clean, auditable code predictions that drive reimbursement integrity and unlock better patient outcomes.

What You’ll Do

  • Own the Coding Engine – architect, build and continuously improve our state of the art Medical Coding Engine and product, balancing rapid iteration with reliability and scalability.
  • Stand up a best-in-class fine-tuning platform – design data pipelines, hyper-parameter search, and automated validation so we can adapt foundation models to niche domains quickly and safely.
  • Create robust evaluation frameworks – develop both automated test harnesses (unit, regression, bias/robustness suites) and human-in-the-loop review workflows to measure model quality end-to-end.
  • Design high-recall retrieval systems – implement vector search, hybrid ranking, and metadata-aware indexing that feed the LLM context window with the right facts at low latency.
  • Prototype and productionize new LLM workflows – explore tool-usage, AI workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and function-calling chains; turn promising ideas into well-documented, repeatable services.
  • Ship models on a true ML-ops stack – build and maintain CI/CD pipelines that cover data versioning, containerized training jobs, model registry promotion.
  • Collaborate across functions – partner with product, design, and backend teams to translate ambiguous problems into clear technical plans and ship end-to-end features on tight timelines.
  • Stay on the cutting edge – track the fast-moving research landscape (e.g., MoE, retrieval-augmented generation, efficient fine-tuning) and propose pragmatic ways to weave new advances into our roadmap.

You'd be a great fit if you have:

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience building machine learning and AI systems, including taking complex products from prototype to production.
  • A strong bias for action, with the ability to rapidly turn ambiguous requirements into working systems.
  • Expertise in building production-grade retrieval systems and vector-based search infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with the end-to-end ML lifecycle—from data labeling and model training to CI/CD deployment and post-deployment monitoring.
  • Fluency in Python and a deep understanding of modern MLOps best practices, including containerization, model versioning, and observability.
  • Experience developing scalable backend and distributed systems, especially in cloud-native environments (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
  • A practical, product-minded approach to AI—prioritizing impact, reliability, and user trust over academic perfection.
  • The ability to break down complex technical problems and communicate them clearly across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Passion for revolutionizing healthcare—particularly for building AI that improves coding accuracy, supports value-based care, and drives better outcomes for providers and patients.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with large language models (LLMs), especially in fine-tuning, prompt engineering, or RAG-based workflows.
  • Familiarity with medical terminologies and coding systems like ICD-10, HCC, CDPS, and CRG.
  • Prior work with LLM evaluation and observability tools (e.g., Phoenix, Langfuse, LangSmith).
  • Experience building or contributing to workflow orchestration frameworks like Temporal, LangGraph, or LangChain.
  • Exposure to health data formats and pipelines (e.g., FHIR, HL7, claims/EHR data).
  • Understanding of the U.S. healthcare system and its transition toward value-based care models.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision.
  • Equity & growth opportunities in a fast-growing, innovative tech startup.
  • Ongoing professional development and access to cutting-edge AI and healthcare tools.
  • Lively, in-person work culture at our SF Headquarters.
  • $150,000 - $250,000 USD depending on experience + Equity + Benefits

Join us in our mission to transform healthcare through innovation!
