The most common question I get: Why Start a Health Tech Company Without Any Healthcare Background?
The answer is simple—we weren’t chasing any particular industry. We were looking for the biggest, most impactful problem AI could solve.
At Rockset (acquired by OpenAI), Scott Morris and I were part of the team pioneering AI infrastructure before most people even realized its potential. We saw firsthand how AI wasn’t just a tool; it had the power to transform industries.
So when we left, we didn’t set out to build a healthcare startup. We spent months talking to experts across finance, logistics, legal, and tech–as well as healthcare, trying to find the vertical where AI adoption could offer the biggest bang.
Every conversation led us back to healthcare.
Despite AI’s rapid advancement, healthcare was still drowning in slow, manual, error-prone processes—leading to wasted time, lost revenue, and burned-out professionals buried in manual tasks instead of focusing on patients.
To truly understand the problem, Scott and I took a year off, earned Certified Professional Coder (CPC) certifications, and interviewed 100+ healthcare leaders.
That’s when we found one of the biggest, most overlooked inefficiencies in the system: pre-bill chart reviews.
Before healthcare providers submit a claim, clinical documentation specialists and medical coders manually review patient charts to ensure billing accuracy.
The process is slow, repetitive, and prone to human error—with a massive financial impact:
🔺 Healthcare providers may lose up to 15% in reimbursements per patient
🔺 The average revenue leakage in specialties like primary care and urgent care is 11% due to coding and documentation mistakes
🔺 Over 70% of claim denials could be prevented with better documentation and billing accuracy
And beyond the money, the human toll was just as alarming—doctors, nurses, and coders were spending hours on admin work instead of patient care.
We saw an opportunity to apply AI where it mattered.
Even though healthcare is complex, pre-bill chart reviews follow structured workflows—meaning AI could be trained to analyze charts instantly, flag errors before they happen, and ensure healthcare providers get paid accurately.
So we built Charta Health to automate the entire pre-bill review process, reducing errors, increasing reimbursements, and giving healthcare professionals their time back.
Before we even came out of stealth, one cold email helped us land major hospitals and medical groups as clients.
That’s when we knew—we were on the right path.
